Choices.
"There is everything you know and there is everything that happens. When the two do not line up, you make a choice."
Choice. A choice can be defined as a power to establish your life. Acording to me, the readiness for making a decision is the first step towards making a choice.
Right from our childhood to our old-age we are surrounded by our choices. Children are bewildered in choosing toys at the toy store, while for teenagers the thought of making a choice itself is bewildering. Adults are indecisive about a justified way of raising their children with affection and not letting them get spoiled. And at the last stage of life, the greys are mostly engaged in looking back at the choices they made throughout their lives.
Now my question is, how do we really want to feel when we look back at out choices? Do we seek pride or regret?
The answer to this question is hidden in the courage to make a choice best suited for ourselves.
Let's look at the challenges one might face while making a choice!
The foremost challenge in making a choice is overcoming peer pressure.
Even today I have come across many classmates who agreed to choose a particular stream because majority of their friends decided to. Though they hangout during the college days, these indecisive students suffer during the examinations and hence their career is sacrificed. Such choices are never productive. One must not make a choice under peer pressure or family pressure.
Followed by peer pressure, the second greatest challenge is to avoid making a choice when you are vulnerable. A wise man once said," Never make a promise when you are happy, never reply when you are angry and never make a decision when you are sad." The credibility of this statement lies in a psychological fact which states that when a person is vulnerable or experiencing grief, he is intended to make a decision which is not analysed with a conscious mind. Making a decision when you are sad leads to a wrong choice. Thus to make a choice fit for oneself one needs a calm mind.
They are other challenges such as self-doubt. Generally this issue is observed in introverts. Due to lack of social interaction they do not participate in group discussions and hence cage themselves in their thoughts which either result in making a choice without studying all the pros and cons of the regard or they end up in not making a choice due to self-doubt. Ironically, not making a choice is also a choice.
Along with introversion, extroversion also has a downside when it comes to making a choice. Unlike introverts, extroverts intend to discuss decisive matters with their friends, family, colleagues and other well-wishers. Recursive discussions can also lead to a puzzled mind which might again end up in making an unjust choice.
Thus, a choice should not be made in radical conditions such as peer or family pressure, introversion, extroversion and grief. There should be a proper balance of one's own opinions along with the suggestions of learned personalities in the regard along with the realisation of reality. This balance can undoubtedly lead to a choice fit for oneself.
Always remember, "Everybody is a fool in somebody's opinion". So you should always bother less about others and more about yourself while making a choice for your own.
Your choice is a stimulus to which your life reacts. Thus, making a right choice is very crucial for oneself.
Lastly, I would like to say that choices are neither made overnight nor in the snap of the fingers. It takes a long duration of sleepless nights to arrive at a conclusion which has to be analysed for upcoming nights. The struggle of these episodes is paid off when our choice serves us with bliss. Undoubtedly, supporters are necessary since happiness multiplies when you get a pat on the back and the regret of making a wrong decision reduces when you have a bunch of optimistic people you can look upto. No matter if you lay down yourself with a wrong choice once, what still stands importance is you had the courage to decide for yourself! And you also have the courage to right your wrongs by reconsidering your choices with broader perspectives!
I would like to wish luck and wisdom to everyone who would dare to choose for themselves.
