NARCISSISM.
Quick question. Did you look in the mirror today? Have you ever been called self-obsessed or a Narcissist for admiring your looks?
The answers to these questions can be explored in the following lines.
Psychologically, Narcissism is defined as the over admiration of oneself and one's own qualities. Psychologists also state that persons suffering from NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) are highly aggressive if they are undermined by someone.
But does this mean that anyone who gets aggressive when undermined or admires oneself is narcissist? The answer is No. The label of 'Narcissism' cannot be slapped on anyone's face without a proper study of his or her personality.
The assertions such as "You are a narcissist", "You are so self obsessed" shouldn't be made without a proper analysis of an individual's personality. They may have an impact on the personality of the person.
According to psychology studies, there are only 1% of narcissistic personalities in the whole world.
However the above diagram shows that about 17% people are accused of being Narcissists without proper authorisation. Also, it has led about 20% people to assume that they are being categorised as Narcissists behind their back.
Such insecurities cause disturbance in the lives of people.
Hence, we must all take care of not labelling anyone without the proper understanding of his or her personality.
The next concerning question is who qualifies as a narcissist? Can it be categorised on the basis of their profession, gender or age? In a survey, it was observed that about 31.2% people considered 'Politicians' to be narcissistic while 35.5% people considered the 'Actors and actresses' as narcissists. Also a few people (about 28%) nominated 'Youngsters' to be narcissists. Narcissism does not depend on the profession, gender or age of a human being, it solely depends on his or her behaviour pattern.
Narcissism is a personal problem and can be treated through various psychological programs over a certain duration. However, the below chart shows the presence of very little assurance amongst people regarding the treatment of such personalities. The reason behind this distrust is the unawareness about the disorder and its prevention measures.
According to me, the need of spreading awareness about the true meaning of Narcissism is the need of the hour.
